Eastbourne is a comparatively new town, although the area has been known to be occupied by humans since the Stone Age. As of 2019, Eastbourne has a population of over 100,000. Eastbourne is situated to the east of Beachy Head, the highest chalk sea cliff in Great Britain. During World War II, Eastbourne was one of the most bombed towns. A lot of famous films, including Harry Potter, were filmed at Eastbourne.

Eastbourne History 

The land of Eastbourne was known to be a mere farming village during the Norman invasion. With the visit of King Edward II, Eastbourne started to prosper in early 1324. Eastbourne then was owned by three wealthy families- the Burtons, Gildrdges and Selwyns. This was in the mid-16th century. 

The transformation of Eastbourne to a seaside resort wasn’t until King George III’s children came to the Sea Houses in 1780 when the land was a fishing village. The arrival of the railway in 1849 changed the scenario of the town and earned a lot of popularity. William Cavendish and John Davies Gilbert, who was the town’s owner at that time, planned to develop the area. This plan resulted in a series of improvements, including spacious boulevards, streets and promenades.

In 1903, the town launched a motor bus company, the first of its kind. During World War II, many refugees came to Eastbourne. Around 4,000 bombs fell on Eastbourne during the war, making it the most bombed town.
